Becoming a volunteer at the Elkhart County Jail allows you to participate in the many programs, classes, and small groups that meet regularly inside the jail.
The worth of programs in the jail is immeasurable, and the clergy, laypeople, educators, and mentors who volunteer there play a key role. Getting started as a volunteer is simple. This link will take you to the SafeVisitor website, which will walk you through the necessary steps to become a volunteer at the Elkhart County Jail.
You will be required to review the Elkhart County Jail’s Safety and Security procedures, consent to a background check, and pay a fee of $12.95 (the fee covers the background check cost). After completing the online training through SafeVisitor and completing your background check, you will receive an email notifying you of your acceptance or denial.
Cory Martin is the lead corrections chaplain, working full time in a non-denominational role. Once you have been approved as a volunteer, Chaplain Martin can assist you in plugging into a ministry that best fits your schedule and your gifts if you aren’t already joining your church ministry inside the jail.
Sharon Lowry is the Program Director at the jail. She can assist with educational, re-entry, or cognitive behavioral programs and materials for inmates in the jail.

Note: Volunteers will not be allowed to use a room to visit an inmate to whom they are related.
